CONFORMATION TRAINING CLASSES

SEE 2009 TRAINING CLASS SCHEDULE BELOW!  CLICK HERE

No classes during June, July and August. Classes will start again September 2nd. We will run another AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program if enough people sign up for the class. See details on the Home page.

Classes run for 30 minutes and are strictly limited to 10 dogs, first come, first served. (Any more than 10 and handlers spend too much time waiting around to get examined or to move their dog.) There are two classes in three rings: 6:30 PM to 7 PM and 7 PM to 7:30 PM. Beginning January 7, 2009, the new format for Ring 1 at our conformation training classes, with Training Director Jeri El Dissi, will be for any handler/dog/puppies that need help in three areas: stacking, baiting the dog, and gaiting methods.

1. Stacking. Preparing the dog for approach of the judge, showing the bite to the judge and controlling the dog during the judge's examination.

2. Gaiting will include gaiting the dogs in a variety of patterns, how to hold the lead, when to change hands when moving a dog, at what speed to move a dog, how to stop in front of the judge, the proper way of doing a courtesy turn, when to do a turn in front of the judge.

3. Baiting from a stack and free baiting; moving and then baiting in place; when to bait and when to stack a dog.

All of this will still incorporate the usual run through, but extra help and instruction will be done on one of these three disciplines each week. Check the schedule below to see which discipline will be emphasized for any particular week.

Rings 2 and 3 will be a basic run  through similar to the situation a handler encounters in the show ring. These two rings are for handlers and dogs that are experienced and need either none or a minimal amount of "teaching" being imparted by the trainer running the class.

On Wednesday evenings in January through May and September through mid-November (no classes the day before Thanksgiving), Waukesha Kennel Club, Inc. offers classes training dog fanciers to train their dog in preparation for exhibition in conformation. Classes are held in an actual show site—the Waukesha County Exposition Center in Waukesha. Classes are held in the 4-H Youth Forum building and start at 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM. WKC members act as judges to give potential exhibiters show ring experience.
